Milk Thistle – Nature’s Detox Herb

Milk Thistle | Chardon-Marie

“Detox” has become a buzz word in the health industry. There are countless products, programs, and protocols devoted to the promise of a “squeaky clean” body that comes with glowing skin and boundless energy. The truth is, many of these are extreme and aren’t sustainable – and, even with the best of health intentions, it’s impossible to avoid all the environmental toxins in our food, water, and air that bombard us every day. These toxins include pesticides, heavy metals, BPA, phthalates, etc. and are unfortunately deeply ingrained in modern life.

One of the best approaches to “detox” is to support the body’s natural elimination pathways on an ongoing basis. This means supporting optimal function of the organs of detoxification – especially your liver.

Your Amazing Liver

Your liver is the top “detoxer” in the body. This vital organ filters the blood and helps to break down fat-soluble toxins so your body can eliminate them, but it can become overwhelmed by too many processed foods, medications, and environmental pollutants. Fortunately, a specific herb can help!

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a flowering herb in the daisy (Asteraceae) family, native to Europe, but now found in parts of North America, Australia, Asia, Africa, and South America.  It has a variety of common names, including blessed milk thistle, Saint Mary’s thistle, Mediterranean milk thistle, variegated thistle and Scotch thistle.

Like many herbs, Milk Thistle has therapeutic properties, and it has long been recognized to be uniquely effective as a liver protectant. The benefits of this herb are attributed to silymarin, milk thistle’s antioxidant, liver-protective compound. Silymarin inhibits the binding of toxins to liver cell membrane receptors and increases the rate of protein synthesis in liver cells, as well as encouraging subsequent repair after injury to cells. It also plays a role in glutathione levels – a key antioxidant for immunity and longevity that also protects against environmental toxins.

Clinical studies show the benefits of milk thistle:

  • Provides natural protection and detoxification enhancement support for the liver.
  • A regenerative tonic to help cope with any kind of liver overload.
  • Mitigates liver problems arising from chronic alcohol abuse, recreational or pharmaceutical drug use, and environmental contaminants.
  • Helps to reduce injury to the liver caused by acute and chronic viral hepatitis, fatty liver, cirrhosis, and chemotherapy regimens.
  • Helps to reverse toxic liver damage and regenerate the liver.

Our carefully crafted milk thistle preparations provide gentle support that aids the liver in its daily function of processing and eliminating waste.
