Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) is a deciduous climbing vine native to the forests of Northern China and the Russian Far East.
The berries of the plant, known as “Wu Wei Zi” in Chinese, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. Schisandra is considered an adaptogen, helping to enhance the body’s resistance to stress, improve energy levels, and support overall vitality.
The berries are known for their unique combination of five flavors: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent. Schisandra has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including liver disorders, respiratory issues, and fatigue.
Modern research highlights its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties.
