Passion Flower
Alternative Name:
passiflora incarnata
Passion flower, or Passiflora incarnata, is a perennial vine native to the southeastern United States and Central and South America.
The plant was used by Native American tribes for its sedative and calming effects. They used passion flower to treat insomnia, anxiety, and nervous disorders. European explorers brought passion flower back to Europe in the 16th century, where it became a popular remedy for similar ailments. Its unique flowers also made it a prized ornamental plant.
Modern herbalists continue to use passion flower for its tranquilizing properties, supporting restful sleep and reducing anxiety without the risk of dependency associated with some pharmaceuticals.
