Lomatium, commonly known as biscuitroot, is a genus of perennial herbs native to North America. The roots of Lomatium species have been used for centuries by Native American tribes for their medicinal properties. Lomatium dissectum, in particular, was used to treat respiratory infections, tuberculosis, and skin conditions.
The root was often chewed or made into a poultice for its healing effects. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, Lomatium gained attention for its purported antiviral properties.
Its use in modern herbal medicine continues, particularly for its immune-boosting and antimicrobial benefits, for helping to treat viral respiratory infections.
