Ligustrum, commonly known as privet, is a genus of flowering plants in the olive family, Oleaceae. The genus contains about 50 species native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia.
Historically, privet has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is known as “nu zhen zi.” It was used to treat ailments like tinnitus, vertigo, and premature graying of hair. In Europe, privet was often used as a hedge plant in gardens due to its dense foliage and ability to be shaped.
The berries of some Ligustrum species are mildly toxic and were traditionally used in folk medicine for their purgative effects. However, modern usage cautions against ingesting the berries due to potential toxicity.
