Hydrangea
Alternative Name:
Hydrangea
Hydrangeas, commonly known as “hortensias,” belong to a genus of more than 70 species of flowering plants. Their origins trace back to Asia and the Americas, with the highest species diversity found in eastern Asia—particularly China, Korea, and Japan.
These versatile plants can be shrubs, small trees, or lianas that climb up trees. The name “hydrangea” comes from Greek, meaning “water vessel,” referring to the shape of its seed capsules. Fossil records indicate that hydrangeas have existed for millions of years, with some specimens dating back 65 million years.
Japanese gardeners introduced hydrangeas to Europe in 1736, and they have since become beloved ornamental plants worldwide.
