Holy Basil
Alternative Name:
Ocimum sanctum
Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is a flowering plant native to the Indian subcontinent. It belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and grows throughout Southeast Asia.
Revered in Hinduism, holy basil is considered sacred and is associated with religious rituals. Its aromatic leaves are widely used in Ayurvedic and folk medicine, often brewed into herbal tea for various ailments. The name “tulsi” means “incomparable one” and reflects its revered status. The plant has a pungent flavor reminiscent of clove, Italian basil, and mint, intensifying when cooked.
Lord Krishna, an avatar of Vishnu, is said to wear a garland of holy basil leaves and flowers. Outside its native range, it can be invasive and is considered an agricultural weed.
