Gotu kola, a remarkable herb, has a rich history dating back to the 6th century BC. It belongs to the Apiaceae family, which includes carrots, celery, and parsley. Indigenous to Sri Lanka, it thrives in tropical climates.
In Sri Lankan cuisine, it’s a staple, featured in dishes like “mallung.” Beyond the kitchen, Gotu kola has been used for over a thousand years in South Asia for its medicinal properties. It’s known as the “herb of longevity” and has been linked to cognitive function, anxiety reduction, and improved circulation. Legend even credits it with healing wounded tigers, earning it the nickname “tiger grass.”
Gotu kola is now gaining popularity globally, especially in skincare products and wellness formulations.
