Ginkgo
Alternative Name:
ginkgo biioba
Ginkgo, also known as Ginkgo biloba or the “maidenhair tree,” is a remarkable species of gymnosperm native to East Asia.
It holds the distinction of being the last living member of the order Ginkgoales, which first appeared over 290 million years ago. Fossils closely resembling the modern ginkgo extend back to the Middle Jurassic epoch, approximately 170 million years ago.
The tree was cultivated early in human civilization and widely regarded as a “living fossil.” Its leaves are used to create ginkgo leaf extract, a popular dietary supplement, used in Herbal Medicine to help support cognitive function.
