Devil’s Claw
Alternative Name:
Harpagophytum procumbens
Devil’s claw, also known as Harpagophytum, is native to southern Africa. Its name comes from the tiny hooks that cover its fruit, giving it a distinctive appearance. The genus Harpagophytum owes its common name “devil’s claw” to these peculiar hooked fruits.
Historically, devil’s claw has been used in folk medicine to reduce pain. The tuberous roots of Harpagophytum procumbens are particularly valued for their potential analgesic properties. In Botswana, it is considered useful for treating various pain conditions.
Although clinical evidence is limited, some studies suggest that devil’s claw may help alleviate lower back pain and osteoarthritis. However, caution is advised due to potential side effects and interactions with other medications.
