Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans), also known as carpet bugleweed, belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and has a rich history. Native to Eurasia, it thrives in damp meadows and woodlands.

Medicinally, it was employed to treat high fevers, including those accompanying malaria. Interestingly, the tubers of bugleweed were also consumed by North American groups as a source of food and medicine.

The Chippewa and Okanagon people ate the roots of rough bugleweed (Lycopus asper) and Northern bugleweed, using them raw, boiled, baked, or dried and stored as an important staple food.
