Blue Cohosh
Alternative Name:
caulophyllum thalictroides
Blue cohosh (Caulophyllum thalictroides) is a woodland perennial native to the eastern half of North America. It has a long history of medicinal use by Native Americans and pioneer midwives. The plant’s root extract was traditionally used to induce labor, believed to stimulate uterine contractions during childbirth.
Additionally, blue cohosh was employed as an anti-inflammatory agent to prevent or reduce fevers. However, caution is advised, as some evidence suggests potential adverse effects. The alkaloid methylcytisine found in blue cohosh may play a role in its uterine-stimulating properties.
Despite its historical significance, researchers recommend using it carefully.
