Andrographis, scientifically known as Andrographis paniculata, is an herbaceous plant native to South Asia, particularly India and Sri Lanka.
It has a rich history in traditional medicine, notably in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Known as “Kalmegh” in India and “Chuan Xin Lian” in China, the herb has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, including infections, fever, and inflammation.
The bitter taste of its leaves and roots is attributed to the presence of active compounds like andrographolides. Historical texts suggest that Andrographis was employed to combat epidemics and boost immune function. During the 1918 influenza pandemic, it gained recognition for its potential antiviral properties.
Today, it continues to be a subject of scientific research for its pharmacological benefits, including its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulating effects, solidifying its role in both traditional and modern medicine.
