“In menopause, we find strength in vulnerability and beauty in resilience.”
Hot flashes are a common complaint among women navigating the tricky terrain of perimenopause into menopause. In fact, up to 80% of women will experience hot flashes throughout the transition into menopause.
While the precise physiological trigger for hot flashes hasn’t been completely understood, a hot flash has been identified as a vasomotor symptom (or, VMS). As estrogen (as well as other hormones) levels change and decline throughout perimenopause the hypothalamus is influenced by these fluctuations, disrupting its function as the body’s natural thermostat.
This disruption in thermoregulatory control means that slight shift in body core temperature can results in a noticeable vasodilatory response (blood vessels dilating) where uncomfortable heat is experienced. Typically, a hot flash begins as a sudden unexpected sensation of intense heat involving face and upper chest that can radiate outwards, spreading throughout the entire body.
Hot flashes can last for a few seconds up to a few minutes and they often occur in the night, also referred to as night sweats. Other symptoms that can occur with a hot flash include sweating, reddening of the skin, headaches, light-headedness, anxiety and heart palpitations.
These episodes of heat and sweating can be incredible inconvenient, disruptive and even distressing for women whether they occur in the night or throughout the day. But there are ways to help lessen the discomfort and severity of hot flashes in the menopausal years.
